Dainichikarashuzo: A Seafood Robatayaki That Earns Its Reputation, Two Minutes from Nakano Station

There are restaurants in every neighbourhood that the people who live there consider essential — not because they’re fashionable, but because they’re consistently good and unlikely to disappoint. Dainichikarashuzo is that restaurant for Nakano. Two minutes from the station, behind a noren curtain, the interior is calm and traditionally arranged: the kind of space that makes it easy to settle in and stay longer than planned.

The kitchen is built around seafood, handled with the seriousness that the category deserves. The sourcing is nationwide — ingredients selected from fishing ports and markets across Japan — and the cooking is straightforward in the best sense: technique applied to good material, without distraction.

What to Eat

The sashimi platter is the place to start. The cuts are clean, the fish is fresh enough that the difference is immediately apparent, and the range of species reflects what’s in season rather than what’s always available. This is the kind of sashimi that clarifies what the ingredient is actually supposed to taste like.

The robatayaki — charcoal-grilled dishes cooked over an open hearth — is the other half of the menu worth paying attention to. The grill does what charcoal does well: it adds depth without obscuring the flavour of whatever is on it. Fish cooked this way, at the right temperature, for the right amount of time, is a different proposition from anything that comes off a gas flame.

The sake selection is thoughtful and worth exploring. Ask for recommendations — the staff understand the menu well enough to make useful suggestions about what pairs with what.

For Groups

The restaurant has private tatami banquet rooms that accommodate larger groups — up to 50 seated. The setting works well for the kind of meal where conversation matters as much as the food: unhurried, with room to spread out, and enough on the menu to sustain a long evening. Reservations are accepted and recommended.
